Now, a copy from Aamir Khan?
Of all films, why a copy of “Forrest Gump”? A pre-review.
It has been 4 years since we last saw the talented Aamir. After the disastrous “Thugs of Hindostan” (even the poster was unbearable to watch which had stalwarts like Amitabh dressed like one of the pirates in “The Pirates of the Carribean”) why would anyone copy a film such as “Forrest Gump”. Even when it won the Best Picture Oscar Award way back in 1995 it was considered as one of the biggest goof-ups (these we’re getting used to it) by the Academy because it beat movies such as “Pulp Fiction”, “The Shawshank Redemption”, “Quiz Show” and “Four Weddings and a Funeral” to win the Best Picture Oscar. Even if Aamir wanted to do a remake there are a gazillion great movies to choose from, but why Forrest Gump. His remake of the Tamil film “Gajini” was brilliantly done.
There are several reasons why “Forrest Gump” became a success story in America. The most important being, it cleverly touched several key persons and events from American History and I wonder how that is going to be replicated in the Indian version. Even if it was replicated, being accepted by the Indian masses is highly questionable.
Aamir has been doing goofy roles as we saw in “PK” and his role in “Laal Singh Chaddha” feels and looks similar. The role of Tom Hanks in “Forrest Gump” was also one of a slow-witted person and of late we have been watching Aamir take to these kind of roles more than any other. Looking at the trailer it seems like the character in “PK” has continued onto this film too.
It is no surprise that Twitter is filled with “Boycott Laal Singh Chaddha” tweets and with so much Punjabi being spoken in the film one wonders if this is a Punjabi film or a Hindi one.
